Hi Qon,

Glad to see you.

Thanks a lot for all your support and encouragement !

We are also working on opening a Github repository.

The Blackvoxel Team

Might i suggest a launchpad ppa for ubuntu/debian/mint users as this would help greatly when releasing new versions of the game, all the user simply has to do is use

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade in a terminal

or for those new to linux, their update notifier (most distros have them installed by default) will alert them to the new game version and allow the user to download the update direct from the ppa without having to navigate to the blackvoxel site to get it.

Hi shadowwraith,

Thank you for your suggestions :)

A year ago I saw this game on a list of games similar to Minecraft, I don't have any money to spend on games, and I was disappointed that it costed money, and now that its free I'm really happy. If I ever do get some money I might even donate some to help you out. I am sure that now it is free, many more people will join the community. Including me.  :P

Hi Johnyknowhow,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

We also hope that the community will grow :)

General Discussion / Re: Newbie Guide?
« on: June 05, 2014, 08:17:53 am »
How do I make a level 4 extractor? It's shown in one of the pictures, but no recipe. I've already got a level 2 and going for 3. Already have 3.

Yes, you are right, there is 5 constructor/destructor tools.

But at this time, only 3 are included in the game. So there is no way to build the others.

That's because, at the game balance step, we decided that after 3 "hand tools" it's time to get the XR-1 Robot. Too much "hand mining" could become boring.

Other constructor/destructor could be added in the future, when new game parts will need new tools.

Ok, so I just got this game today. The RTFM told me to read the manual, I did, didn't really understand it much, and I can't figure out what to do really. Has someone made a guide for newbies (who have no idea what they are doing)?
I would really appreciate that since this game looks really cool. I just don't understand it.

Hi Johnyknowhow,

Unfortunately, there isn't yet some guide for newbies. But it will come at some point !

Blackvoxel is an adventure game. Like Qon said, that's part of the goal to find what to do with what you found.

But, we understand it could be difficult for players who aren't familiar at all with this kind of game.

So, we'll think about creating some kind of tutorial for beginners in the future.

In the meantime, we can help you.

So, a quick tutorial :

At start, life is hard, you have nothing but your base machine and a basic slow tool for digging in the ground. As you'll progress, your life in this hostile world will get easier as automation will make for you the hard tasks.

First, you should collect some minerals in the ground of the blue zone. With the collected materials, you'll start creating machines. With machines, you'll create other machines, robots, automation, vehicles.

Machines and vehicles will help you to explore the world, make tasks and resolve problems.

Use the left mouse button to dig. Dig a staircase going down. Collect all the minerals you found (all blocks that are different from the blue one). Dig down until you found blackrock green and collected exactly 32 of them.

Next, you'll have to make a melting furnace :

Put your Base Machine on the ground, then put the 32 blackrock Green next to the base machine. Put them one by one, the machine will "eat" them. Finish by putting one Blackrock Blue. At this point, a new machine will get out : a melting furnace.

With the melting furnace, you'll make allloys. Follow the tables in the melting furnace page to get the right composition for the alloy you plan to make.

You'll notice some materials are too hard to be collected. For collecting these, you'll have to build first better and faster tools.

The first tool you'll have to build is the "Constructor/Destructor 2". For building it, you'll have to make bronze alloy in the melting furnace and make your new tool with the base machine following the table indicated in it's page.

Once your tool is built, open your inventory and place it at the top left slot in the "tools" section. It will replace your old one, allowing you to collect new materials, dig deeper.

One of the first goal you'll have to reach is making an Extraction Robot XR-1. Once done, it will dig and collect materials for you and your life will be much easier.

At the end of the tech tree, you'll build the Airplane that will help you exploring the world.

Thanks to our community for reporting bugs, remarks and suggestions.

Here are the changes since version 1.32 :
  • Controls : Added key "c", "v", "b", "n", "x" as an alias for mouses buttons (left, middle, right, scroll down, scroll up) for machines without some of theses (some laptops, macs, special controllers, etc)...
  • Game Testing : Added jump-points for saving several player positions (Experimental : Game must be compiled in dev-mode).
  • Fixed : Lava river zones didn't rendered correctly since 1.31 and the new zonemap format.
  • Fixed : Important state save bug with some elements.
  • Started : Long term progressive work of restructuration, cleaning, code rework and documentation for better integration of contributive work.
  • Added : GetFontPixel() now give access to font bitmap for easy making various text slides with Squirrel.

Hi shadowwraith,

That's Fixed  !

New version 1.34 Beta is just released on the download section.

We fixed all we found working wrong and we hope all is fixed, but we'll control all other game elements to be sure it's completely stabilized.

Report if you have any problem with it.

Thanks again for these useful bug reports.

Blackvoxel V1.33 (Linux mint 16 Petra AMD64)

There is a problem with the Atomic Compression unit, i had

20 copper and iron bars
11 grey cast iron bars
1 base machine
1 amethyst
20 stainless steel bars

i was building them up to make the multi-purpose robot

and over 70 blackrock-white (from the blackrock-white area deep down, NOT the area with the water).

these are all gone, but the areas mined to get them have stayed the same.

It seemed to have started from the first time i added the blackrock-white voxels to the storage inventory, they don't disappear straight away, instead i have to quit the game and reload and the items are gone, but there does not appear to be a pattern or order on what items will disappear from storage.

Thanks a lot shadowwraith, you just found a nasty bug in this version  ???

After hunting it, we managed to reproduce the bug and understand how, when and why it happens.

So, in few days at worst, we'll release a fixed version.

It seems that bug was born with the recently introduced "intelligent saving system" that was necessary for further improvement.

In the meantime, I found a workaround that could help: before saving, put or remove a block on the top of the atomic compressor. It will force saving the entire sector and the state of the atomic compressor will be recorded.

Suggestions / Re: More user friendliness
« on: May 27, 2014, 06:30:18 am »
ok, who's bright idea was it to add a key that sends voxels to kill you (F10 fear key), there's no way to cancel it, you have to start a new game again. >:(

Very, very sorry about that.

That's a weird development idea we thought to add to the game some months ago : a wave of attacking bad voxels that would demand to defend your base against (and to make resistant materials...).

That might sound interesting. But, as this "feature" is slightly destroying, we concluded that this idea must be deeply thought about the right place and stage of the game for introducing it.

So, we decided to make a key for the community to test it...

But unfortunately, with time, we forgotten it...

If you save and reload the game, then hide under the ground deeply enough, all the bad voxels will dies at trying to reach you. Once all are dead, they shouldn’t come again unless you press the "Fear Key" again.

Sorry...

Suggestions / Re: More user friendliness
« on: May 27, 2014, 06:06:22 am »
I've just started playing the game for a day or so and find the game needs a few touches to make it more user friendly and more engaging for casual gamers.

Things such as

In the inventory menu there could be popup text to tell you what the selected block/item/ore is, atm i have to constantly quit the game and goto the user manual online to find out what it is.

Also popup text to say what was added to the base machine/furnace etc, at the start of the game we don't have the capability to make sequencers and conveyor belts yet, so we have to go by memory on what was added.

A map would be handy also, i have found my self getting lost quite a few times, especially when going from blue, white (the area with the water) then to the green areas ( lava pits bordering the insane black area).

an in-game manual, trying to memorise ore sequences for the furnace can be quite difficult at times and having to quit the game then go online to view the manual is pretty annoying at times.

A storage box, where users can store items that will still be there if they die, also a way to retrieve items lost on death, it's quite disheartening to build up alot of ores and tools only to loose them all if you fall down a hole or get killed by those smiley faces.

 just a few thoughts.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

This is very useful for us to get report on how the game is perceived and what is missing, particularly at the first moment of the game. That will help us to decide about the right development priorities.

You will be glad to hear some of your suggestions are crossing ideas we planed to implement. Some might get on top of the stack.

But things are going their rate as we are a small team. (All help will be appreciated).

For the manual, we can suggest using windowed mode and switch to the manual without quitting the game. This can be achieved with "i" key or the F1 and F2 key.

About the storage box, there is one. That's the "Atomic Compressor".

Troubleshooting & Bug Reports / Re: windows 7 game locked up
« on: May 27, 2014, 04:59:37 am »
I have windows 7, downloaded the game, messed with the game resolution settings, (i believe they are too high) when i look at the log it tells me there is no video device capable of that setting and now i have no idea how to get back into the game to change the settings back lower. please help

Thanks for reporting the problem.

There is a way to get back to the default settings.

The settings for Blackvoxel are stored in a directory called "Blackvoxel" in the "My document" directory.

In this directory is a file called "Settings_Hardware.dat". It's where hardware settings for Blackvoxel are stored.

You can delete this file. And the next time you will launch Blackvoxel, the default settings will be used. The file will be created again when you go to the settings in Blackvoxel and save to exit.

Alternatively, you can edit it with a text editor and set your hardware resolution to something you want.

If you play fullscreen, it is important to set the resolution matching your LCD native resolution.

Many users want to use windowed mode for using manual at the same time. In this case, set some resolution inferior to the LCD and unset the "full screen" setting.

Troubleshooting & Bug Reports / Re: Linux Mint install issues.
« on: May 24, 2014, 02:02:37 am »
i am also having trouble installing Blackvoxel on Mint 16, i have tried both the 12.04 and 14.04 versions to no avail, it appears that libglew1.6 was removed from the ubuntu repositories in 2012, the current version of libglew is libglew1.8, but the game explicitly requires libglew1.6

Thanks for your report.

The provided binary packages are compiled individually on the targeted distributions with the library versions used on it. It's why these packages are tied to a particular distribution and version.

Mint 16 is based on Ubuntu 13.10. The Ubuntu 12.04 versions uses libglew version 1.6 and the 14.04 versions uses libglew 1.10.... and the debian version uses libglew 1.7.

So, I’m afraid none of these packages could work on Mint 16. But it should work for Mint 17 with the Ubuntu 14.04 version.

Also, with the move to free software, there is now a way to run Blackvoxel on unsupported distribution : compiling from source code.

It's not as simple as installing the packages, but on linux it's can be done with a few steps. You can find a tutorial here

As several users want Mint, we think to add it for the next versions. But I have decided to do for you now a special version of the Beta 33 64 bits for Mint 16. (Tell us if you need 32 bits.)

You can download it here : blackvoxel_1.33beta_amd64.deb

Remember it is a beta version. So report any problem with it.

Blackvoxel is now a free software.

We said at game launch that one day, Blackvoxel will become a free software.

This day is now!

So, the full and complete Blackvoxel game is now released entirely under the GNU GPL V3 free software licence.

This mean you can now get the game freely, source and executables.

Blackvoxel is a recent game but we released it early to free software because the educational nature of this game for learning programming requires a free open source distribution.

We also hope that the community will appreciate our efforts. We would like the community to be actively involved in this project.

This game cost us years of efforts and works. In return, we count to the community for financial support to continue active development.

You can now download the new release 1.32 of Blackvoxel.

Thank you for your interest and your contribution!
